A Fateful Encounter

DM-Despair.

{DvT}Viper was just ahead of me around the corner. Water. I could here him splashing through it. He'd be going up the stairs, he always goes for the eightball. There are two weapons he's deadly with, the eightball and the minigun. There's only one prediction question: will he come back down the stairs or make the jump. It's hard to tell. He'll make the jump if he doesn't know I'm behind him, but the water will clue him in if I follow too close. I go for it. Through the water right behind him, Flak in hand. He's now in view again as he runs the short stretch to the eightball. My flak launches of a secondary shell. Direct hit. Gibs everywhere. I'll pay for that, to be sure.

Latro joins the server (in later months the server, available only occasionally, will be known as DvT-East-- right now it's up all the time and it's our only server). This is odd. This is a passworded server. Everything stops.

{DvT}Sapient6: who is Latro?

{DvT}Viper: Hey, who are you?

{DvT}Mac_380: Who is Latro?

{DvT}Viper: Get the fuck out, asshole!

{DvT}Sapient6: did Katmai recruit you?

No response.

{DvT}Sapient6: who is Latro?

No response.

Throughout the rest of the game we'd occasionally ask who he was, but there was never an answer. He could fight, though. Later we'd get our answer. Latro became {DvT}Latro. If anything has characterized his presence in the Deviants, it's silent reliability. {DvT}Latro is a solid teammate and a solid player. He might not talk much, but when the call of duty was made he answered. {DvT}Latro is joining Oldman and I in order to complete the infallible Tribunal of Overseers.

Congrat's, {DvT}Latro! w00t!

And a Good Time was had by all...

Can I shoot yet?

Can I shoot yet?

Can I shoot yet?

BLAM!

The gibs of DvT's newest member rain down around Sapient6 who nearly falls over he's laughing so hard.

It appears that someone was enjoying life at Trial more than was decent. Well, if that's what it takes to get the man with the eyes that blaze Deviant Green to laugh, so be it. With a barely perceptable motion, Hex nods and a new badge appears on the Roster page; a new Overseer is in our midst.

He waits unseen in the shadows wrapped in the black cape, observing. The unsuspecting Rush pleads Guilty to Deviance and demands a Trial. A giggle from beneath the cowl? Couldn't be; musta been the wind. The Trial begins, the cape drops and a figure in armor is there...

Once again {DvT}Sapient6 has answered the call. Congratulations.

October 18, 2000 -- {DvT}Sapient6

Welcome to Deviant Hall

Suddenly Hex yells, "Hold your fire!"

...thump thump thump thump... running with these boots on just isn't a quiet affair... thump thump thump thump...

"{DvT}Deb, change your tag!" Hex is somewhere barking orders, but I'm not sure where. Deb doesn't know what's coming. I wonder if Hex does?

"Can I shoot yet?" Deb remains silent, this is gunna be a riot.

... thump thump thump thump... Woooosh-chunnk, as the Flak Cannon loads a shell and prepares to fire... thump thump thump... there she is!

"Can I shoot yet?"

Still no response from Hex. Deb's tag appears just after I step directly up behind her. Good, she should have been unable to see my approach. Point blank. I want to laugh right now but she would hear this close. Hey, nice ass.

"Can I shoot yet?" If Hex doesn't answer this time...

"Yes."

BLAM!

The trial is over and judgement has been swift, a benefit of having the clan leader as your overseer. The gibs of DvT's newest member rain down around Sapient6 who nearly falls over he's laughing so hard. And don't think Sapient6 doesn't know he's the only one who finds this so funny. He's perfectly aware that this sort of joke is only funny to the one pulling the trigger.

Welcome aboard, {DvT}Deb7! May the green light guide and protect you.

July 23, 2000 -- {DvT}JonahHex

A Deviant?

You bet!! Would he be satisfied with a mere 2on1 Trial? I think not. He wanted 3on1: "I'm not afraid." --- hehehe --- After almost pulling off an upset on Deck16 and learning that this was a bad plan by getting spanked (but certainly not humiliated) on the next two maps, in the best tradition of the Deviants' Credo he simply complained that he just "couldn't get moving." {DvT}VoLTcOLT, after getting run over by a wheelchair and then thumped by an Axe, no one found this to be too surprizing. Be assured that {DvT}VoLTcOLT's bring it on attitude and bicycle powered PC are going to be a force to be reckoned with.

The addition of {DvT}VoLTcOLT is a good way to bring July to a close. JonahHex (7/9), Blecht (7/10), FBall (7/19), and Oberon28 (7/22) all celebrated their first anniversaries with DvT this month. Only Sapient6, Steel_On_Target, MAChine, and Ithaqua have been with us longer. Latro (8/4) and Pipefighter (8/10) aren't too far behind either. The stability, longevity, and growth of the Clan is a tribute to us all. Congrats.

This boy was guilty

Flo-jo got handed a beating and took it all in stride. In fact... I believe he was laughing and enjoying the beating he was dealt, so I don't think that in this case the deviance part is in issue....

Flo-jo was as unsuspecting as a lamb led to slaughter: he calmly took his 56K connection and walked into a server 3000 miles away (on 30 seconds notice that his Trial was starting) that had two dsl-type LPB Overseers waiting for him.... Only a Deviant could laugh and party during this shameless overmatch. {DvT}Flo-jo, you patiently waited for your tag and it is well earned! Welcome and Congrats!!!

June 4, 2000 -- {DvT}JonahHex

UY has long been lurking on the fringes of Deviance...

...tonight Oldman and Random_Axe brought him in from the cold; warmed him up with hot cocoa and flak cannon grenades; and debriefed him at ShockRifle-point about his wanderings through the Unreal community. The information, or lack thereof, which the debriefing elicited certainly will not be be disclosed here. Suffice it to say that he proved his fragging skillz and Deviance -- {DvT}UY, your clan tag is well earned - welcome aboard!!

Historical footnote: Never before in the annals of Deviance has the art of complaining about (better than 56K) connection performance (ISDN) been perfected to the degree that UY has demonstrated. He truly has "become one" with this aspect of the DvT Credo and is an inspiration to all of us.

May 25, 2000 -- {DvT}JonahHex

School is Out

and the true Deviants are emerging from under their desks. MCDOER found enough time to learn to play this game; he found enough time to rush DvT; but he couldn't squeeze a Trial into his dance card. So he made some vague noises about when school is out and a walk through Deck16... Well, school is out; it was more like a bloodbath than a walk or a dance and {DvT}MCDOER is guilty of gross Deviance in the 1st! Now he is off to grad school at DvT U!!

Here Kitty, Kitty, Kitty!!!

That critter ain't no kitty. Kitties don't run around with a Sniper Rifle in one hand, a Rocket Launcher in the other and an Off Switch in their mouth... That thing is {DvT}Katmai, spewn up from the bowels of the Chemistry Waste Treatment of CMU as too HazMat to associate with the grunge that normally inhabits the place. So, of course, we welcomed him back with open arms. hmmm kewlness! he seems to have the DvT-East server attached to his ankle. My goodness, Katmai! What a fat pipe your server has...

May 18, 2000 -- {DvT}JonahHex

BungCrack Finally Joins DvT

It is old news, but certainly worth repeating: BungCrack whooped it up on May 9 at his Trial and proved his Deviance convincingly. YakBalls recognized Bung's deviant ways last summer and ZeroFactor has been helping him hone them to a fine edge since. Welcome {DvT}BungCrack!

Out of the Ashes of Nothingness

the Phoenix rose. {DvT}ZeroFactor was never there; never a Factor...or so they thought. The frags came from nowhere. The families of the victims could not have closure; their loved ones were gone and no one knew how or why. But the day did come; a stray shot; a random frag; there was smoke; there was ash; a magnificent bird of fire arose and the legend was proven true - the Phoenix does exist and it is a Deviant. Nothingness consumed and {DvT}Phoenix flies. One peril is gone. Another is born.

May 6, 2000 -- {DvT}JonahHex

He pled "guilty" to Deviance ...

... and gave us no choice. It was written all over him! If Epic has a clue, the next generation of Unreal bots will be modeled after The Gorfian Robot, the newest addition to the Deviant Pantheon. But writing code that just approximates his skillz will set a new standard in AI. The Overseer declared {DvT}GORF to be a "keeper," and keep him we will. Congratulations {DvT}GORF and welcome to our house; you're home now.

On the Match Front

We won one and lost one. On April 29, HTK took us to 3 games before we put them away in Tempest. HTK took Deck16, DvT won Curse][ and Tempest. Blecht, Oldman, Random_Axe and dagger rocked on in this well fought battle. Good work, Deviants! Kudos especially to Oldman for his performance in Curse][!! On May 6, RC gave a fine demonstration in teamwork in taking Deck16 and Curse][ from us. Latro, Blecht, Oldman, Random_Axe, dagger, and JonahHex gave their all, but it was not to be this time. Latro and Axe kept us in it on Curse][ -- GGs guys.

They cut his throat

so, of course, ZeroFactor is doing well. Welcome back, ZF! Glad to hear that they got the cyst in your neck out. We expect the factory-restored version of the ZeroFactor to be better than ever. Recuperate quickly so that Zero gibs will again be a DvT staple.

April 11, 2000 -- JonahHex

Legend Passes into Myth

Stepping down from his throne in the Hall of Deviants, Sapient6 steps aside as Hex takes his seat by the throne. Sapient6 stepped into their midst, but seemed to be gone. They looked around wondering where he was. When they gave up they realized their new leader was smirking at them. In the shadows behind the throne stood a cowled advisor. Blecht claimed to the few who would listen that he could just make out the eyes under that hood, and a twisted malevolent grin. It could be no one else.

I don't know what is more intimidating: taking the leadership role of DvT, trying to fill Sapient6's shoes, or knowing that there is a cowled figure standing behind me... Today Sapient6, as Leader of Clan Deviants, moved into the realm of myth, soon we expect to see him as a Constellation among the stars -- Orion and his Belt will be forgotten in the shadow of Sapient6 and his Bad Attitude and broken keyboards...

March 19, 2000 -- Sapient6

A Dagger in the Back

The newest Deviant to be judged by the Tribunal has received his sentence. {DvT} Dagger, who took a beating in the first round, brought it all home in the second round... well almost... in the second round he nearly outscored the Overseer's guest. And that can take some doing. Congratulations to {DvT} Dagger. Welcome to the Fold.

Rushes

Another rush has come DvT's way. UrsaMajor, of the Unreal Clan {OF}, has declared his intentions of rushing DvT. Good luck, dude.

March 15, 2000 -- Steel_On_Target

BStard is a Deviant!

Or maybe Deviants are.....nah, we'll leave that one alone. Welcome {DvT}BStard, our newest member! (Okay, so this isn't exactly new news, but news nevertheless).

Speaking of news...

Thanks to Unreality and especially to Preacher for bringing things back up without data loss. You ROCK!!

March 3, 2000 -- Steel_On_Target

This is what happens when...

...you float like a butterfly and sting like a friggin bazooka! It takes a truly twisted individual to be an Tribunal Overseer in DvT. It also doesn't hurt to be able to bounce into a room and shake it up at will. 0-100 reflexes? Nah! We're talking 0-10,000 to lay down this type of carnage.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! to {DvT}Pipefighter, DvT's newest Tribunal Overseer!

New Rushes

We've had several people show interest in joining DvT. You'll be seeing them in practices over the coming weeks if you haven't seen some of them already, so give them the normal DvT hospitality (double-kill, multi-kill, rockets up the arse, combo bloodbaths, etc etc etc)

Welcome, and good luck to:
Dagger
UYjr
BStard
BuNgCrAcK

...of Violence?

Tonight's trial...well were do ya start? It was a pants-down, leather belt across the butt ass whoopin' by Oldman and Pipe Fighter. Those guys took care of me like a British nanny. Anyway, they played great games and man, have I got a lot to learn.

The way I heared it, he played well and stayed in good form except for one suicidal bit. He deserves this sentence, and has been found quite guilty.

Deviation comes in all forms. Random Axe was deviated to begin with, believe me... But no one is so deviated that they can't be deviated a little more. You thought the axe was random before? HA! Oh, and lets not forget to mention that DvT has just increased its New England presence... heh. Can you say LAN PARTY? I'm certainly going to try!

January 12, 2000 -- Sapient6

The dying rasp issued forth from his throat...

...as the two deeply deviated killers loaded up (ka-chink!) another round to finish the job. They had hunted him down throughout the corridors and under the vaulted ceiling of Deck16][. Sure he had died, what other choice was there? (ka-chink!)

Before it had started everyone had been all smiles. Everyone friends. (ka-chink!) He had even ventured to believe he might step out of the ring victorious. (ka-chink!) Of course he hadn't really known what it meant to be a deviant. He had seen some of the action during the few practices he had been invited to attend... but the perfect pairing... (ka-chink!) the almost psychic link between the deviants in action... that he hadn't expected.

He would have laughed now, looking back. But he couldn't draw in a breath anymore. (ka-chink!)... a tiny voice in the back of his mind said, "that's six, DR... you know whats coming..."

Everything was slow motion now. He heard the rockets leap from their chamber and come tearing down the hallway towards his prone body. They didn't seem to spread out, though. No, of course not, he thought, they've been fired in tight formation. Just before they hit he heard another sound...

A deep but quiet rattling sound deep in his chest. He was dead before the rockets hit.

The next day he was reborn. The killers who had destroyed his carcass in his previous life now called him brother.

{DvT}DeathRattle was born.

January 7, 2000 -- Sapient6

The 7th Seel was broken, and 7 Furies were visited upon mankind

FuryVII is back. Once you're deviated, you can never fly right again. FuryVII is now more deviant than ever before, and as a means of expressing his increased deviation he has become a Tribunal Overseer. Welcome back, FuryVII! Glad to have you back on board!

January 3, 2000 -- Sapient6

Newest Overseer

Just recently, it seems, I was recommending further correctional measures for {DvT}Oldman. Well, he's still hopelessly in need of those correctional measures... but he has at least reached the point where he can recognize other people think he has a problem! And as a means of revenge {DvT}Oldman has opted to begin inflicting his own punishment on others. {DvT}Oldman is now a Tribunal Overseer.

Congratulations, {DvT}Oldman. AND PUT THAT CANE DOWN, GOD DAMMIT!!!

January 2, 2000 -- Sapient6

Rushes

Whats a rush? A rush is someone who is trying to join our clan. Since the process is so long it seems like a good idea for them to have a special title. We currently have five rushes. I'd like our members to keep an eye out for them when online. Try to join games with them. Get a feel for whether you'd like them in our clan.
Current rushes:

DeathRattle has already made it through the initial stage. Consensus of the clan members who played with him was that he was a cool guy and a kick ass player. He has been granted a trial, and I suspect he will soon be an official member of DvT.

Membership Freeze

Because we have five rushes, and also have 15 active members, I am freezing membership for the time being. Twenty members is a LOT for a clan, and I don't want our tight community feel to be lost in the shuffle. So we will wait for the 5 rushes to be sorted out. If they don't all make it then I may consider taking in another rush or two, but first I'll need to see how the new members affect the clan. If it feels full then I will close membership.

Now I don't mean to be totalitarian about this. I know I asked for input and the FEW responses I got were to let good players in still, I still think having too many members could pose some real problems. My apologies to anyone who sees this differently. Feel free to voice your objections to this freeze via onelist. But for the time being lets just see how all this pans out.
